Clinical Laboratory Technician I

We are a growing laboratory in Shoreline with a wonderful group of employees and have an immediate opportunity for a full-time onsite Clinical Laboratory Technician I to join our dedicated Laboratory team.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This role will work in our Sample Processing and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Testing team. The Clinical Laboratory Technician will be responsible for specimen handling, processing, and testing with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with laboratory procedures. This role involves testing high-volume specimens for STIs using automated liquid handlers and analyzers in a fast-paced environment. The Technician will work within a team of Laboratorians in a high complexity, high production setting to provide test results to medical practitioners, and patients. High attention to detail and clinical mindedness are crucial to success in this role.

 

This position is required to be supervised by the General Supervisor at all times during the initial 3-month period or until competent when handling patient sample testing in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES include:

Specimen Handling and Processing

· Receive and verify specimens, ensuring proper labeling and matching to test request forms.

· Enter required patient and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) accurately.

· Process specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols, maintaining sample integrity.

Specimen Preparation

· Prepare specimens for testing following established laboratory protocols and guidelines.

· Ensure proper storage and disposal of samples in compliance with safety standards.

Testing and Analysis

· Perform high-volume testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) using automated liquid handlers and analyzers.

· Monitor and troubleshoot equipment to ensure consistent and reliable test results.

· Follow quality control (QC) procedures, documenting results, and addressing deviations.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

· Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, and safety regulations, including CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards.

· Participate in proficiency testing and maintain compliance with accreditation requirements.

· Maintain continuing education credit requirements.

Communication and Documentation

· Communicate effectively with laboratory team members and supervisors regarding any issues or delays in testing.

· Document all activities accurately, including specimen receipt, preparation, and test results.

Instrument Maintenance

· Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments and analyzers.

· Identify and escalate technical issues to the supervisor or technical support as needed.

· Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary while assuring effective use of supplies

Misc Duties

· Attend and participate in lab meetings and in-service education programs.

· Works as a team player during all assignments and be involved in decision-making processes of the laboratory as requested.

· Provide coverage for staff absences in collaboration with supervisors.

· Any other duties as assigned by General/Technical Supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Associate or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related science required.

· Previous experience not required. Training will be provided - must pass competency assessment to perform patient testing independently.

· Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems a plus.

· High level of attention to detail, strong communication and organizational skills.

· Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, on-call, or other shifts depending on business needs.

· Able to work successfully on an independent basis and as part of a team.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

· Able to bend, squat, and reach to locate, retrieve and organize materials for extended periods.

· Fine motor skills, including ability to use hand tools requiring fine motor skills.

· Visual acuity and ability to see and pipet 96/384 well micro-titer plates.

· Must have the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PPE:

· Job involves working in a laboratory handling human biological specimens.

· All employees are provided with the proper PPE including face shields and masks, lab coats, and gloves. We pride ourselves on the safety measures taken within our facility to protect our employees who are dedicating their time to delivering quality patient care.

 

SCHEDULE:

· During Training - Monday to Friday

· After Training – Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am – 7:30 pm or 7:30 am to 4 pm

Pay Range: $21.00 - $25.00 per hour
